Excellent Italian food and no, it's not the Olive Garden. As for BBQ, it's slim pickings. In St. Louis, pork butts are typically sliced and cooked as steaks - then slathered in a bitter sauce and called barbecue. For that type of local flavor you can try the longstanding Phil's BBQ on Gravois. It's a local favorite but I was sorely disappointed. If you're desperate for BBQ you can try Bandana's, a local chain. They cook on Southern Pride cookers and come close to getting it right. I've heard good and so-so things about Super Smokers, but haven't tried it myself. There is a place out Manchester Rd. past Olive (which may not mean much to an out-of-towner) that I've heard about and passed by once. It's a tin-roof place about which I saw a good review, but I think it may only be open during the summer. Sorry, I can't remember the name. I'll try to do some homework. Monty
Posted by Scottie on October 01, 2002 at 11:12:19: Darren, you're better off going to a place like "The Hill" for some good Italian...
Posted by ShoddyHog on October 01, 2002 at 13:34:50: Some folks proclaim Super Smokers as being "good". I've only eaten at one of them one time, and was not impressed. If you decide to give them a shot, try the one on I-44 in Eureka. The Hill, as Scottie suggests, is a better bet for a good meal. Also, the "Tap Room" (Schlafley Brewery) has some good food and firmented grain beverages if you are so inclined. Gerry

I don't know where they are but I do know they have them in St. Louis because my in-laws are from there and have mentioned how much they like it. Hope this helps. Slowsmoke Posted by Utah Jake on October 02, 2002 at 03:04:59: We were in St. Louis this summer and boy for a town that has a cut of ribs
named after them, they sure don't have much "Q". We went to the hill
and got ripped off in a place called Modesto or something like that. Left there
$60.00 lighter and went to Appleby for some real food. Best "Q" I
found on that trip was a sandwich joint in Nauvoo called Hunt's and a converted
warehouse in Hannibal, Mo. on the Mississippi that had a smoker out back.
To Whom it May Concern:
I'm a business man from St. Louis and have an
office in Memphis. I know good barbecue! I love barbecue! I love the
barbecue in Memphis I make trips down south as often has possible.
However, St. Louis is finally getting some quality barbecue joints. I
have to say that St. Louis barbecue finally rivals Memphis and certainly beats
Kansas City's. Bandana's, Super Smokers, Chaneys and Richard' Ribs are
all GREAT St. Louis joints. There is another Barbecue restaurant
in St. Louis that I feel out-taste them all. The slow smoked barbecue and
fixings beats them all. Pit Masters is
incredible! I'm not affiliated at all with Pit Masters.
I simply have a passion for barbecue and thought you ought to know.
Best Wishes to all,
John from St. Louis
