Why is your team name what it is?


The comments that follow on this page are some of the reasons people choose their BBQ Competition Team Names.  The comments are all extracted from a thread that was started on the BBQ Forum.   The thread was started by "Jazzyjoe" and is very interesting and so I have copied all the comments to this page on BBQSEARCH.COM

Good subject,our team name is "off the sauce cookers" and for years i tried to produce good bbq and for years it turned out just ok,sometimes not so good but i called that a good drunk cause id usually pass out sittin at the cooker then after several trips to jail for nurmious drinking related issues and 30 years of hard drinking i decided to sober up and found myself able to produce good bbq according to folks who ate it so we put together a cookin team and what better name for our team than off the sauce cookers,that was 4 years ago and were still off the sauce and do pretty good in compition not yet made the jump from backyard to the big boys but its comin soon.So if your ever at a cook-off and see our banner stop by and say hi we can exchange ideas over a cup of maxwell coffee or a nice cold cola and if you drink dont be affraid to stop by any way your drinkin dont bother us but ours do,happy cookin to yall

My team is Sawyer Oven Works, this is the name of my cheese cake business so to help the overall marketing effort, I use SOW on my cheese cakes, catering and BBQ cook-offs.

The 2 guys that started the team are named Earl & Brian, so take the E from Earl, and the B from Brian and you get EB (pronounced ebb, not E.B.) and it is spelled with a capital E, Capital B, not Eb.

I came up with "Cool Smoke", because of two things. 1) I own a upscale catering company called " A Sharper Palate", which takes things way too serious. I wanted to have a name which was very relaxed and fun. 2) I also thought the name was appropriate because we would smoke foods at lower or cooler temperatures.

I wanted a tie in with the University of Florida Gators, but not so obvious that the name might turn off a potential catering customer (FSU fan, UM fan, etc). People in FL can be pretty passionate about their college football. The field where the UF games are held is nicknamed "The Swamp". So we're the Swamp Boys.

I started out cooking with a group of friends at The Pig Jig. After a few years the guy in charge decided to quit going. We had been doing it mostly for fun so I started Jus-Fer-Fun as a new team which is now my wife, myself, and various family and friends at various times.

Our team members, Nina, Jody, and I used to cook with "The Dixie Boys". Nina and Jody told me that they wanted to name the team "Bill & the Dixie Chicks". My feelings where "no way". They then informed me that if I did not want to be a one man team, I hade to agree with thier choice. My Mama always told me to pick my battles. Hence the name.

Tuff Rub, comes from having 5 kids and having to have tuff love with them no matter what the outcome. If I didn't I would have killed a couple of them. Its the same with bbq, it can be very furstrating sometimes, when you do something the same way every time, "so you think" and it just bombs for some unknown reason. So you have to be tuff with it, love it and keep trying to improve it, just like my kids or get out. Hence the name Tuff Rub.

Ok, that's not mine, but a buddy's team name. He just built a new 32 ft enclosed trailer with special logos and such. Not that his bbq makes you gag, but it stands for the "Get Along Gang" They have 5 team members, so therefore a "gang".

Mine is presently "Que Bird BBQ". I have a Bluebird Wanderlodge RV and it's named "Que Bird". It seems all Wanderlodge owners name their bus something related to bird. The "Que" is for bbq and the "Bird" is for the bus.

I'm waiting on DK to finish my pit and I'm working on an enclosed bbq trailer for contests. I have been trying to come up with other names that would represent Klose BBQ pits. (Disclaimer) I have not run any of these by David. I like "DAK", but the wife and kids (might as well include everyone else) hate the name. "Dead Animals Kooking".

The other one is "Que Bird BBQ, A Klose Encounter". YATAHA

Who knows what the name will be, but I'll bet Momma wins.

My team name is Corliss Johnson Memorial Foundation. I changed my team name to honor my wife. Anything I win from BBQ, I donate the money for cancer research... $775 dollars so far... ;-)

Mealtime BBQ has become the team name because this is a nickname (Mealtime) that some buddies of mine gave me. You can only imagine how I got that name! When it's mealtime I will always be there.

I live in the Mojave Desert. When I entered my first contest, I had to think of something to put on the application form. The desert is hot, so I put the two together. I kind of had in the back of my mind someone telling me once, what makes you think you're such hot stuff? (as she was telling me to get lost).

Team name is Pigs, Pegs and Pellets

Offered a prize for help with a team name and a friend came through. My wife changed it up a tad to get what we have now.

Mainly "Pigs" for the bbq, "Pegs" for the sticks I walk on and "Pellets" because I oten use a pellet cooker.

I cook on two teams

I Smell Smoke !!! and Team Agave

I Smell Smoke !!! got it's name from the frequent fire department visits from the neighbors complaining that they smelled smoke. The team is made up of 5 friends and our families.

Team Agave grew out of my affection for fine 100% Agave Tequila. When the group from ISS can't make it I'll put out a call for some help on the New England BBQ email list. Members of several teams have joined me at various times. It's fun cooking with people from other teams, I think we learn from each other. I also cooked one contest solo and did ok.

Well, at first it was going to be Tommy's BBQ... then realized that in order to have any credibility in the bbq world one must have "Fat" in their name..... and since I'm pushing 290 it works out pretty good. :)

Great friends, great band, just took the name and the family crest and ran with it.

Whenever we cook, our Neighbor's tend to come over. We always love taking care of them. Also, my brother/teammate Ed brews beer about every other weekend. I used to brew alot, but family and BBQ have taken alot of my time. Thus the team name "Neighbor's Brewin' & Quein'"

For the first 7 or 8 years of competeing we were known as Smoke For All Seasons, cause we are a New England Team, and we did ok for a while. But last year we had new members join up with us and the team had new chemistry, and oh yeah we LOST alot! Kinda like brining up the Anchor. So I thought that a team name change might help, SO being from Rhode Island, The Ocean State and our state flag has an anchor at the focal point... Well We became The Anchormen.

I was looking for a name and Lance's BBQ just didn't sound authentic. Kinda like Lance's Original Chinese (I do make some awesome chinese food, I lived in Taiwan for two years).
My father-in-law is one of the people I most admire and he said I came use his name, thus, Bud E.'s BBQ.

My younger brother (I'm the oldest of 6) starting calling me "Marcus the Dead Carcass" years ago. My family shortened it to just Carcass over time. So that is how we came up with the name the Carcass Cookers. Plus it just goes with BBQ in a sick sort of way.

Our team name is Who's Your Daddy. I just thought it would be funny when we got called up on stage to hear them say "Whoooo's yourrr daddyyyy!!" so that's why we chose the name. Kicking around the idea of a name change, though. The newest member of the team (my girlfriend who came along AFTER we formed the team) thinks we need something a little different since she's part of the team, too and doesn't think it really fits with her. Can't really argue with her but it's fun to anyway! LOL

The team I started with 12 years ago and the team I cook with at Riverfest in Decatur is a group of neighbors that really like to party.

I am a pretty down to earth kind of guy and like to take a low profile approach to most things I do. I didn't want anything 'flashy' so I settled on "The BBQ Guy" because so many of our neighbors used to refer to me as "The BBQ Guy" because I was always cooking on the weekends.

I cooked 500lbs of brisket for work over a weekend. A friend called me a brisket dog. I also have ad Doberman named Brisket. I used to cook under Bruce's Dalmatian Chef BBQ. BDCBBQ. But the Dalmatian died so I changed the name.

Despite what the name Rolling Smoke implies and the elated looks I get from some of the local college students when they see my truck with the website (www.rollingsmoke.com) on the back window, any herbal similarities reminiscent of Cheech and Chong had nothing to do with the choosing of a team name. The name actually started out as Smoke On Wheels which could be represented by the acronym SOW but realizing this name would not be fitting for the ultimate goal of a restaurant, I came up with Rolling Smoke Barbecue. I figured it would be fitting for either a mobile or a stationary location.

Nick name of mine from college was "Hoff". Years later, "Hoff Daddy" came from being with friends in a beach house with everyone's rug rats running around all the daddies. Since I was always BBQing for everyone, I was told I had to call my team "Hoff Daddy's".

Our team name is Cowboy Up Barbeque. We were driving to our first contest in 2001nand trying to think of a name while we were listening to the new Chris Ledoux cd and he came on with the song "Cowboy Up" and we thought it was cool.
